Wildlife Buffalo Jump & Random Ramblings

Image
Random stuff. Buffalo Jump Madison 2024 The traditional Indian hunting of Bison used a Buffalo Jump. The Bison were herded to a cliff or a large hole. Basically corralled. Then spooked to stampede where the lead animals would be pushed off the edge by the following herd. At the base of the cliff the butchering took place. This practice continued until 1700s after which horses were used. We climbed to the rim, no snow, but a lot of ice. Views of the Madison Valley and east towards the Bitter Root Ranges. This valley landscape is massive, 1000s of times bigger than the Ida Valley in Central Otago, NZ,  The flight path video below of arrival into Bozeman passed over the Buffalo Jump site. Snowmelt, in this part of the valley, has been rapid in the last four weeks. The topography looks flat with the snow but it isn't. In the video we passed over the Gallatin River. This joins the Jefferson and Madison Rivers. The confluence of all three rivers, at Three Forks, is the start of the Misso...

Bozeman Activities

Drinking Horse Mountain In the last days with Teri and Katie more snow.   It is very dry with no humidity. Even though the temperatures are negative it doesn't feel cold.  At these latitudes there has been plenty of daylight, 11 hours per day. We are at the equinox with spring just around the corner. This means the bears will becoming out of hibernation. Daylight saving has started. Hyalite Canyon A day snowshoeing in pristine conditions. The Hyalite to Lake Crescent return. The whole area is absolutely stunning, as per the photos. After the the snowshoe hike, wrapped up the day with an open fire in the snow, toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate. Dead Horse Mountain Trail Headed up the Bridger Valley Road and found the trail head.  There was another 12" of new snow over night. Being a popular climb we decided to use crampons as the snow would be well pressed by the time we got there. Not being early risers we have soft starts. Fabulous  360° degree v...

Bozeman - North Yellowstone

BOZEMAN - WEST YELLOWSTONE  The eastern end of the Bozeman Valley. Nothing planned after Idaho prior to going to North Yellowstone . First job. Getting the pills, meds sorted. I usually get this scrambled, because we gain a day flying here from NZ which means an eight day week. This time two Wednesdays. Flying home we loose a day and have only a six day week. This is one of life's little challenges for me, always has been. Back on message now. The girls climbed to the big "M" letter on the side of the hill over looking Bozeman. It is similar to the Hollywood sign in LA. Photo above is on the way up. A chimney fire at the house got us moving! It started halfway up the stack. Threw a fire retardant into the firebox and shut the door. Sent out an SOS. Tom and Alexis came over to check. Fire was out. Katie went up on the roof with a chimney brush, and reamed out the stack. Stack is going to be checked professionally for piece of mind and I dare say, to ensure insurance cover ...
