Random stuff. Buffalo Jump Madison 2024 The traditional Indian hunting of Bison used a Buffalo Jump. The Bison were herded to a cliff or a large hole. Basically corralled. Then spooked to stampede where the lead animals would be pushed off the edge by the following herd. At the base of the cliff the butchering took place. This practice continued until 1700s after which horses were used. We climbed to the rim, no snow, but a lot of ice. Views of the Madison Valley and east towards the Bitter Root Ranges. This valley landscape is massive, 1000s of times bigger than the Ida Valley in Central Otago, NZ, The flight path video below of arrival into Bozeman passed over the Buffalo Jump site. Snowmelt, in this part of the valley, has been rapid in the last four weeks. The topography looks flat with the snow but it isn't. In the video we passed over the Gallatin River.
